Wednesday 20th May I went down to a local cycle time trial near St Austell.

Put on by St Austell Wheelers (SAW), it was a well organised event and the weather (which had been awful for most of the day) held off.

Photos are in the gallery.

It's round 3 time at Soggy Bottom

No done much mountain biking for a while & when I have, it has tended to be leisurely rides, so a few days before I was wondering if I had done enough training before the race. I was essentially relying on the endurance I had built up on the road bike.

The weather was getting gradually better during the week and I woke up Sunday morning to sunshine, with a little frost on the fields. Not that I thought it would be a dry race though. I’d done Soggy Bottom before and although most of the tracks they use have good drainage, with around 100 bikes doing 3 laps in race one, you could more or less guarantee the second race would be a muddy one.

I set of early so that I could get some photo’s from race one and have a warm up before the start. When I arrived, race one had started, but didn’t bother with the photo’s, instead choosing to chat with a few mates. At least I was more in the mood for riding now. I got some more good news when I was able to quiz a mate about the course (that’s not the good news) – he came 2nd in the fun race.

There were a lot of people racing. The Veteran class had about 40 – 45 people, with probably more in both the Masters and the Sport categories. The start was on a slight hill, with a large hill right in front. I took it easy on this hill and continued to pace myself on the first lap. The course was technical in places, with some excellent singletrack and some fast straights. In the last round (the first time I’ve entered this class) I was really struggling on the last lap, but this time, I had enough left in me to up the pace for the last quarter of the lap. Not that it did much as there was no-one in site.

This was a brilliant race, well organised and great for all abilities. I would recommend anyone who fancies having a go at MTB racing.

Me – well I need to wait until tomorrow for my result.

Mountainbiking at Soggy Bottom

Sunday saw the second round of the Soggy Bottom mountain bike race series from Newnham Park in Plymouth.

As you may imagine from the weather we have had recently, it certainly lived up to it's name.

There are some photo's in the gallery from the morning race (Fun, Grand Vet & Juvenile categories). I took over 100 shots, so there are only a few shown. There are no pics from the later race as I was competing in that one.

The course held up quite well, but after well over 200 riders each riding 3-4 laps on average, there was a lot of mud! Each lap got progressively harder, with less & less traction and personally each lap also took more & more effort.

Many thanks to Martyn Salt and his team who organised an excellent event.

Now it's time to look forward to round 3 in March.

Just a quick message to say Happy New Year to all that visit my site.

I will try to post more pictures this year and keep the site better updated.

Throughout the year I will be attending different events that I will either be photographing or taking part in. I plan to enter 3 triathlons, around 3 - 4 mtb races/events and a couple of cycle events.

Local Olympic silver medalist, Wendy Houvenagel visited a local cycle meeting point on Sun 21st Sept.

Wendy Houvenagel, who gained the Olympic silver medal in the womens pursuit this year, visited Bissoe Cycle hire near Truro this Sunday.

Bike Chain (the company that runs the cafe / hire centre) were one of the first to spot Wendy's talent and sponsored her prior to her becoming professional and have continued to support her since.

I have added 2 shots of Wendy in the image gallery.

Not posted any shots for ages now, as I have been busy working.

Went to the Pymouth Firework Championships last week, so have posted a few of the shots I took there. \These are just a quick edit as I would normally 'crop' most of these shots so the picture concentrates more on the display and has less black 'space'.

Hope you like them.

Cornwall MTB met with the Yogi group for a big ride out.

26 people set of from Postbridge and took the '5 Stepping Stones' route around Dartmoor.

We had a little accident & lost one, but gained a few more on the way. Great day riding.

Looks like this could the first of many such rides.

All pics taken with compact camera (difficult to take the SLR when riding)

Sorry, but no pics from round 2 of Soggy bottom on 13th Jan.

I took part in the 'fun' race & to be frank, was happy to get home and relax afterwards.

Not bad for a first race. Came 5th. I was 3rd at the end of the 1st lap though and had a pretty good race with the eventual 3rd place finisher all the way until half way through the final lap when my legs just stopped going quite so fast.

I will be back for round 3 on 17th Feb & hope to do better.

Must get fitter!
